Hey sports fans!! Thanks for stopping by my blog! I am a self admitted “rink rat” so a lot of this blog will be about figure skating and hockey, however as an ex-figure skater, ex-varsity athlete and a sports fan in general, I usually have thoughts and opinions about alot of different sports I follow, so visit often!
Only after Johnny signed his 6 year $40.5 million dollar (USD) deal did I allow myself to get excited about the new NHL season!! I started to get worried about Johnny missing the opening game but aside from the fact I though he should get at least $7 million (USD) per year, all is now good in Flames country! He did pretty good considered he is a restricted free agent and has no rights to arbitration for 5 years.
Hate the Leafs but this deserves an honourable mention. In the Leafs vs Senators game, Auston Matthews scored 4 goals and the Leafs still found a way to lose. Whoo hoo!! First player in modern day hockey to score 4 goals in his NHL debut!!
New Oilers arena. It’s stunning!! I’m glad the Flames played in the Oilers home opener because I would have otherwise missed some cool moments like Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier suiting back up in Oiler jerseys and taking a spin around the ice!! What a cool sight!! And as an added bonus Jari Kurri was in attendance as well and will be in Calgary for the game on Friday! How cool!!
With the announcement of Gretzky as Partner and Vice Chairman of the Oilers Entertainment Group and the fantastic young talent the Oilers have, the Battle Of Alberta just got a whole lot more exciting again!!
The new arena in Edmonton looks fabulous, and when Sportsnet reported the details about the $15 million spent on technology alone in the new building, I got jealous and wanted Calgary Next to hurry up and make some decisions about Calgarys new arena!!! That’s when I found this cool article.
The Oilers home opener was also the first game for newly minted, youngest captain ever, Connor McDavids first game wearing the “C”.
After the first period, it was 3-1 Oilers and we were not looking good, but a couple of short handed goals in the 2nd period tied it all up. Well, that only lasted a few minutes and suddenly it was 5-3 after a penalty shot by Connor McDavid. This game had it all, even one fight and all this only half way through the game!!
Final score was 7-4 for the Oilers. Not the start we wanted. Looks like we still have a big hole in net. Its going to be a long season!!
Go Flames Go! Go Johnny Go!!
