Hey sports fans!! Thanks for stopping by my blog! I am a self admitted “rink rat” so a lot of this blog will be about figure skating and hockey, however as an ex-figure skater, ex-varsity athlete and a sports fan in general, I usually have thoughts and opinions about alot of different sports I follow, so visit often!
The big excitement here recently has been the return of Connor McDavid to the Edmonton Oilers lineup after he broke his collarbone. I laughed aloud when the radio called him Connor McBroken, and that started me thinking about the cool nicknames we give to athletes.
In hockey, it’s very common. In fact, it’s more uncommon NOT to have a nickname. Some players just get shortened squishy versions of their names, and some players get really cool nicknames. Every great hockey player has been given a nickname.
Here are some of the good hockey ones:
In figure skating, I really don’t see much of this happening. Maybe it’s more of a team sport thing or maybe just a North American thing to do. Here are the only ones I could think of in the sport of figure skating. Oh and by the way, when I say “nicknames”, I’m not talking about what an athlete’s name means in their culture, I’m just talking about fun names that special athletes are given by their peers, fans or the media:
Other skaters that have or have been given nicknames:
I’m sure there are a few more, if you have any that you want to share, please send me a comment!! Johnny Weir has one, but I didn’t want to put it here.
In an unrelated topic, I just received my Worlds tickets, and am SOOO super excited!!! Cannot wait to see Yuzu in person again!! What a dream!
Go Yuzu Go!! Doki Doki!
How about Tiny Queen for Satoko?

Yup, McJesus is one of them as well, but they are trying to get away from that one. There are even online polls on what to name him, its crazy!

In Japan, many fans call Daisuke Takahashi ‘Dai-chan” and Mao Asada “Mao-chan.” In our language, this sounds like “little Daisuke” or “little Mao.” They have been stars here since they were very young, so we use the words with a lot of attachment/affections to them. We usually use “chan” only for close friends or little children.
About Yuzu, however, many fans call him “Hanyu-kun” (“kun” is usually used for young boys, but it is a neutral word that doesn’t suggest any feelings behind) and I have never heard somebody called him “Yuzu-chan.” In my opinion, Yuzu has a smart and self-deciplined image since he was younger, so “chan” does not suit him. It does not fit for someone who has a hate-to-lose character like him.
Some fans call Plushenko “Plu-sama.” “Sama” is used for a person in a very high position like a king or feudal lord.
Wow, it was like a Japanese lesson…..

My favorite nickname is “Aniki” or “Lipnitskaya Aniki” for Yuria Lipnitskaya.
( mean is elder brother or big bro in Japanese, often used in Yakuza movie
for the someone who is respectable and dependable position)
Because she is so cool even though she is so young. and has kind of attitude
In a cool way and doesn’t smile much. I saw this nickname when she was maybe 15, what a cute Aniki!

I suspect that Nam uses namnamnoodle due to NamNam Noodle Bar being an actual Vietnamese noodle restaurant. And Nam is ethnically Vietnamese.
