Hey sports fans!! Thanks for stopping by my blog! I am a self admitted “rink rat” so a lot of this blog will be about figure skating and hockey, however as an ex-figure skater, ex-varsity athlete and a sports fan in general, I usually have thoughts and opinions about alot of different sports I follow, so visit often!

FIVB: World League 2015

Great news!! Team Canada mens volleyball is once again part of the World League!! Team Canada will be kicking off the new World League season in Calgary, Alberta!!  Team Canada did not participate in World League play during 2008-2011, however in the last 3 seasons, the team has been back in action among the best in the world, placing 12th, 5th, and 13th respectively!!

Team Canada (currently ranked 14th in the world) will start their pool play this season against Cuba.  Canada has not played Cuba in World League action since the early 1990’s, when Joel Despaigne led the Cuban team to many volleyball podiums on the World League and World Cup circuit.  If I recall correctly, Despaigne had a vertical jump of over 40″!!  To watch him during warm ups spiking the ball on or in front of the attack line was incredible.

I’m excited to see World League live action again this season!!  Last season, Team Canada hosted Finland at the Corral, and it was fun to see so many familiar faces at the event!  Even though Canada won the match 3-0 and it was over too quickly, it was great to see international level volleyball back in Calgary again.

Since the Men’s’ National team moved their training base from Calgary to Winnipeg, I’ve lost track of the team and how they have been doing.  Kudos for the International Volleyball Federation for bringing World League play back to Calgary again!!  Team Canada mens volleyball has not qualified for the Olympics since 1992, so the lead up to the 2016 Olympics will be exciting as Team Canada has been improving steadily!!  Fingers are crossed that we will qualify for the upcoming Olympics!!

At the same time that the World League game will be played in Calgary, the Canadian Indoor National Championships will also be held in Calgary!  Volleyball Canada has selected Calgary to host the 2015 Canadian Open Volleyball Championships! The event will be held in May 2015 in a combination of venues including the Olympic Oval and BMO Centre. The 2015 Canadian Open Volleyball Championship is expected to attract over 10,000 athletes.  This event hosts athletes from all ages, and is the largest volleyball event in Canada.

It’s going to be a great week of Volleyball!!  Don’t miss it!
